NanoAOD versions ================= Using nanoAOD branches in CROWN ------------------------------- When a new NanoAOD version is released or a custom version is produced for an analysis, the list of available branches (quantities) can change. There is a script (``code_generation/utility/generate_nanoaod_branches.py``) that automates the process of discovering all available branches and their metadata (like data type and description) and codifies them into a Python file. To use the script, run: .. code-block:: bash python code_generation/utility/generate_nanoaod_branches.py -i -o Replace ```` with one or more NanoAOD ROOT files (space-separated) of the wanted nanoAOD version, and ```` with the desired output Python file. The script will parse the input files, extract all available branches and their metadata, and write them to the output file for use in CROWN. The generated file becomes a single source of truth for a given NanoAOD version, and your analysis can be configured to use it. The generated file is saved in ``analysis_configurations/quantities/``. The naming convention should be clear, e.g., ``nanoAODv9_run2.py``, ``nanoAODv12_run3.py``, etc. Within your specific analysis, you create a nanoAOD quantities module that points to the desired NanoAOD version. This is done in the ``quantities/__init__.py`` file of your analysis directory. To use e.g. the NanoAOD v9 branches, the file should contain: .. code-block:: python from analysis_configurations.quantities import nanoAODv9_run2 as nanoAOD __all__ = ["nanoAOD"] Version differences ------------------- CMS has different versions of the nanoAOD format, with each data-taking run typically introducing a new version that includes updates, bug fixes, or new features. A CMS documentation of the various nanoAOD versions and there branches can be found here: https://cms-xpog.docs.cern.ch/autoDoc/ For Run-2, the UL datasets were fully reprocessed using nanoAODv9. In Run-3, a new nanoAOD version is introduced each year, starting with nanoAODv12. The expected "final" version for both Run-2 and Run-3 will be nanoAODv15. However, these version updates also bring changes to branch data types in the nanoAODs. Since C++ code in CROWN requires explicit type definitions, these changes can cause compatibility issues.
